The 4.0 grade scale
US high schools and colleges typically score letter grades on a 4.0 scale, with a plus adding about 0.3 and a minus subtracting about 0.3. This tool uses the most common version of that scale.

The scale continues the same way down through C-, D+, D, D- and F. Checking the weighted box adds 1.0 grade point for an honors or AP course, except on an F, which never gets the bonus point.
Worked example: GPA from 4 courses

Add the points earned: 8.1 + 16.0 + 12.9 + 4.6 = 41.6, over 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 12 credits. Divide 41.6 by 12 for a 3.47 GPA.
How the cumulative GPA is added in
Checking include a previous GPA turns your old GPA back into points, by multiplying it by your old credit total, then adds those points and credits to the new term before dividing again.
A previous GPA of 3.5 over 30 credits is 105 points. Add this term's 41.6 points and 12 credits: 146.6 points over 42 credits gives a cumulative GPA of 3.49, closer to the previous 3.5 than to this term's 3.47, since the 30 previous credits outweigh the 12 new ones.
Leaving previous credits at 0 makes the cumulative number match the term GPA exactly, since there is nothing else to blend it with. The more credits already behind you, the less a single new term can move your overall GPA.

What is the GPA for an A, a B+ and a weighted A-?
With 3, 4 and 3 credits, that is a 3.93 GPA: 4.0 x 3 + 3.3 x 4 + 4.7 x 3 (the weighted A-) = 39.3 points over 10 credits.
How much does weighting add?
This tool adds 1.0 grade point for an honors or AP course, the most common convention, so a weighted A becomes 5.0 instead of 4.0. Some schools use different weighting, so check your school's policy.
What is a cumulative GPA?
It combines your new courses with a GPA and credit total you already have, weighting both by their credit counts.
Does a plus or minus grade change the GPA?
Yes. A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, and so on, on the standard 4.0 scale used by most US colleges.
Does F count toward weighted credit?
No. This tool never adds the honors point to an F, since a failing grade is not usually weighted at any school.
Is this the same 4.0 scale every school uses?
Most US high schools and colleges use this scale, but some weight honors classes by half a point instead of a full point, or cap AP courses at 5.0. Check your own school's policy if your GPA looks off.
What happens if I enter 0 credits for a course?
That course is skipped entirely. A course needs a credit value greater than 0 to count toward the GPA.
Can I calculate a GPA for just one semester?
Yes. Leave the include a previous GPA box unchecked and enter only that semester's courses for a standalone term GPA.
