Metric vs imperial
Most of the world uses metric units. The United States still uses customary units for height, weight, speed and cooking, and the UK mixes both, with miles on road signs and pints in pubs. Since 1959 the inch and the pound have been defined exactly in metric terms, which is why the factors above are exact.
