The pound's Roman roots

The pound descends from the Roman libra, a unit of about 0.72 of a modern pound that spread across Europe with Roman trade and law. English law eventually settled on the avoirdupois pound, and the 1959 international agreement fixed it at exactly 0.45359237 kg, ending centuries of slightly different local pound definitions.

The kilogram, by contrast, is a purely metric invention from the French decimal reforms of the 1790s, with no older unit behind it. Britain still keeps a second pound-based unit alive for body weight: the stone, at 14 lbs, which never made the jump to kilograms the way most other weight measurements did.

Both units have been used to weigh people, animals, food and freight for centuries, but only one of them, the kilogram, is also the SI base unit for mass, meaning every other metric weight unit, from milligrams to metric tons, is defined as a multiple of it.

A quick way to estimate without a calculator

• Halve the pounds, then subtract 10 percent of that half. For 200 lb: half is 100, minus 10 is 90, close to the exact 90.72 kg.
• For a rough estimate on the fly, halving the pounds alone gets within about 10 percent, which overstates the kilograms slightly.
• For small numbers, like a 10 lb bag, the same method works: half is 5, minus 10 percent is 4.5, close to the exact 4.54 kg.

Pounds at home, kilograms almost everywhere else

Pounds remain the everyday weight unit in the US for body weight, groceries and shipping. Kilograms are standard almost everywhere else, and universal in science, medicine, engineering and international freight, which is why a US pound figure often needs converting before it means anything on a foreign label or spec sheet.

Even inside the US, some fields never switched to pounds: pharmaceutical dosing, lab work and most scientific research report mass in kilograms or grams, so a US patient's chart can list weight in kg even though the same person would give their weight in lbs out loud.
