Length, weight, temperature, volume and area
One converter covers 10 categories. Each has its own base unit that every other unit in that category converts through, plus the specific units you can pick from.
| Category | Base unit | Example units |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Meters (m) | Centimeters, inches, miles |
| Weight | Kilograms (kg) | Grams, pounds, ounces |
| Temperature | Celsius (C) | Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin |
| Volume | Liters (l) | Milliliters, gallons, cups |
| Area | Square meters (m2) | Hectares, square feet, acres |
Speed, data size, time, pressure and energy
| Category | Base unit | Example units |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Meters per second (mps) | Km/h, mph, knots |
| Data size | Bytes (B) | Kilobytes, kibibytes, gigabytes |
| Time | Seconds (s) | Minutes, days, years |
| Pressure | Pascals (Pa) | Bar, atmospheres, psi |
| Energy | Joules (J) | Calories, watt-hours, BTU |
Pressure and energy units map to different everyday jobs. Psi is what a tire gauge reads, bar is how weather reports state air pressure across most of the world, and atm is the unit lab gas laws use. On the energy side, joules are the scientific base unit, calories label food energy, and kilowatt-hours are what an electric bill is calculated from.
KB, MB, GB: decimal vs binary
File sizes and memory are counted two different ways, and mixing them up explains most "missing storage" confusion.
| Scale | Decimal (1000-based) | Binary (1024-based) |
|---|---|---|
| Kilo | KB = 1,000 bytes | KiB = 1,024 bytes |
| Mega | MB = 1,000,000 bytes | MiB = 1,048,576 bytes, 4.86% more |
| Giga | GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes | GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, 7.37% more |
| Tera | TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes | TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, 9.95% more |
A single 1 MB file is exactly 1,000,000 bytes, which works out to 976.5625 KiB, not a flat 1,000 KiB, since a KiB holds 1,024 bytes rather than 1,000. Storage makers advertise the decimal figure, while some operating systems display the binary one under the same label. That gap grows at every step up, which is why a bigger drive seems to "lose" more space than a small one.
Why a month or year is an average
Calendar months run from 28 to 31 days, so the time category treats a month as 2,629,800 seconds, exactly 30.4375 days, the average length once leap years are spread out. A year is 31,557,600 seconds, or 365.25 days, the same average used to define a leap year every 4 years.
For example, an 18 month lease works out to 18 x 30.4375 = 547.875 days here, not the 547 or 548 you would get by guessing every month is exactly 30 or 31 days.
These averages are useful for rough duration math, but they will not match a specific real calendar month exactly. For an exact date-to-date count, use a date calculator instead.
Unit converter FAQ
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
A KB (kilobyte) is 1,000 bytes, the way storage makers and most file sizes are measured. A KiB (kibibyte) is 1,024 bytes, the way memory and some operating systems count.
How many categories does this cover?
Ten: length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, data size, time, pressure and energy.
Is temperature converted the same way as the others?
No. Temperature uses an offset formula instead of a simple multiplier. Pick Celsius, Fahrenheit or Kelvin and the tool handles that automatically.
How precise are the results?
Results show up to 6 decimal places and drop trailing zeros, so both tiny and huge conversions stay readable.
Can I convert months or years to seconds?
Yes, under the time category. A month is treated as an average of 30.44 days and a year as 365.25 days, since calendar months vary in length.
Why does my 1 TB drive show less than 1 TB on my computer?
Drive makers count a terabyte as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, the same decimal definition this tool uses for TB. Windows measures free space in binary TiB but labels it TB, so a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB.
Can I convert knots to mph?
Yes, under speed. A knot is defined as 1 nautical mile per hour, which equals exactly 1.852 km/h, or about 1.15 mph.
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 square feet. An acre started as the area a team of oxen could plow in a day and was later fixed to this exact figure.
