Two very different histories

The kilogram is a metric unit created in 1795 and, until 2019, was defined by a single physical platinum-iridium cylinder kept in France. A quick way to estimate without a calculator

• Double the kilograms, then add 10 percent of that doubled number. For 20 kg: double to 40, add 4, land on 44, close to the exact 44.09 lb.
• The same trick scales up: for a 90 kg adult, double to 180, add 18, land on 198, close to the exact 198.42 lb.
• For a rougher but faster estimate, just double the kilograms. It undershoots by about 10 percent, which is fine for a ballpark figure.

Where each unit is used

Almost every country outside the US, plus science, medicine and international shipping everywhere, weighs things in kilograms.
