A volume unit named after a weight

The fluid ounce started as the space taken up by one ounce (by weight) of wine, which is why the name mentions weight even though it measures volume. The milliliter is simply a thousandth of a liter, the metric volume unit, with no such history behind it.

US recipes, medicine labels and drink sizes still use fluid ounces, while ingredient lists and metric measuring cups almost everywhere else use milliliters, so the two show up side by side on a lot of packaging.

A quick way to estimate without a calculator

  • Divide milliliters by 30 for a fast estimate. For 355 ml: 355 divided by 30 is about 11.8, close to the exact 12 fl oz.
  • That shortcut runs a couple percent low, since the real factor is 29.5735, but it is close enough for judging a bottle or glass size.
