What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. Websites use it because files are even smaller than WEBP, which is why saved images sometimes arrive as .avif.
Why can't I open AVIF files?
Older versions of Windows Photos, Photoshop and many other apps do not support AVIF yet. JPG opens everywhere.
Why won't my browser read my AVIF?
AVIF needs a recent browser: Chrome 85, Firefox 93 or Safari 16.4 and later. Update your browser if a file will not open.
