For a 25% tip, take a quarter of the bill: $15 on $60, $25 on $100. For 20%, move the decimal point one place left and double it.
How rounding up and splitting work together
With Round total up on, the calculator adds the tip, rounds the total up to the next whole dollar, and then splits that total between everyone. The tip absorbs the extra cents.
On a $47.50 bill at 18%, the tip is $8.55 and the total is $56.05. Rounded up, the total becomes $57, so the tip grows to $9.50, which is exactly 20% of the bill. Split 3 ways, that is $19.00 each instead of $18.68.
Rounding adds less than a dollar, so it moves the percentage most on small bills. A $33.40 bill at 20% comes to $40.08, which rounds to $41, a tip of about 22.75%. A rounded total can still leave cents per person: $57 split 2 ways is $28.50 each.
Tipping norms in the US and abroad
At US sit-down restaurants, 15 to 20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range, with 18% a common default. Counter service, takeout and tip screens at checkout have looser norms, and many people tip less there or skip it.
Outside the US, customs vary widely. Many countries add a service charge to the bill or build service into menu prices, and tips are smaller or not expected for everyday meals. Check the local custom before you travel.
Tip mistakes that cost you money
- Tipping on the after-tax total without meaning to. With 8% tax, a $60 bill becomes $64.80, and 18% of that is $11.66 instead of $10.80.
- Splitting evenly when people ordered very different amounts. Split each person's share of the food first, then apply the tip to each share.
- Adding a second tip on top of an automatic gratuity already on the receipt for a large group.
