Decibels and how much louder they sound

Each 6 dB step roughly doubles or halves the perceived loudness, which is why the difference between +18 dB and +24 dB is much bigger than it looks on the slider.
Working with video files
Video files are accepted alongside audio. Only the soundtrack is processed: the picture is dropped and you get back an MP3 or WAV of the boosted audio, not a video. Use this when a clip's dialogue is too quiet to hear, then re-add the boosted audio in a video editor if you need it back in the video.
Getting a clean result
- Start at the default 6 dB and only push higher if the recording is still hard to hear.
- Keep the limiter on for any boost above a few dB, since it catches peaks that would otherwise clip and crackle.
- If the recording still sounds muddy after boosting, the problem is likely background noise, not volume. This tool only changes loudness, it doesn't clean up sound.
Volume booster FAQ
What does the limiter do?
It's a compressor that kicks in the instant the signal passes about -3 dB, squeezing peaks down at a steep 12:1 ratio within 3 milliseconds. That softens the loudest moments so you can push the overall boost higher without harsh crackling.
How much boost should I use?
6 dB (the default) roughly doubles the perceived loudness. 12 dB is about 4 times louder, and the maximum of 24 dB is about 16 times louder, at which point the limiter is doing a lot of work.
Can I lower the volume instead of raising it?
Yes. The slider goes down to -12 dB, which is roughly a quarter of the original volume, useful for a recording that's actually too loud or clipping.
Can I boost the audio from a video file?
Yes. Drop a video and only its soundtrack is boosted and exported as an MP3 or WAV audio file. The picture is not kept.
Will boosting fix background noise?
No. It raises everything in the recording, including hiss and background sound, by the same amount.
What bitrate is the exported MP3?
192 kbps, a fixed setting that gives a good balance of size and quality for boosted speech and music.
Should I turn the limiter off?
Leave it on for anything above a small boost. With it off, pushing gain higher than the file can handle will clip and distort, since nothing is holding the peaks back.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The boost is calculated on your own device.
