How to record from your webcam

- Pick a different camera or microphone if you have more than one.
- Stop and download the recording, or convert it to MP4.
Choosing your camera and microphone
Both dropdowns start out showing generic names like "Camera 1" until you grant permission, at which point they refill with the actual device names your system reports. If you have an external webcam or a headset microphone plugged in, it appears in the list alongside your built-in ones.
Recording format and converting
Recording uses the same MediaRecorder API most browsers support, which almost always means WebM output with VP9 or VP8 video and Opus audio. If you need MP4, for a video editor or a platform that doesn't accept WebM, the Convert to MP4 button re-encodes the file after you stop.
Getting a good take
- Record a short test clip first to check your framing, lighting and audio level before a long take, since there's no live preview of the saved file until you stop.
- Pick your camera and microphone before you start. The dropdown selections lock in once recording begins.
- If the browser denies camera or microphone access, check your browser's site settings and allow both, then reload the page.

Why does my browser ask for permission?
Recording video needs explicit camera and microphone permission from your browser. Nothing records until you allow it, and the camera and microphone lists only show real device names once you've granted access.
Can I switch cameras during a recording?
Stop the current recording first, pick the other camera from the list, then start a new recording. Switching mid-recording isn't supported.
What format is the recording?
Most browsers record WebM with VP9 or VP8 video and Opus audio. Use the Convert to MP4 button afterward if you need MP4 for another app or editor.
Is there a recording time limit?
No. It keeps recording until you click Stop, limited only by your device's memory.
What if I have more than one camera or microphone?
Both dropdowns list every connected device. Pick the ones you want before you click Start recording; the selection can't be changed once recording begins.
Can I record without a microphone?
The recorder requests both camera and microphone access together, so a working microphone is needed to start, even if you plan to mute the audio afterward with the mute video tool.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, on your own device.
