What does the phase check do?
It reverses the right channel's signal. With correctly wired speakers this makes bass sound thin and the stereo image spread out, since the two speakers are now working against each other.
Why can't I hear anything above a certain pitch?
Most speakers, especially small laptop and phone speakers, roll off well before 20 kHz. Human hearing also gets less sensitive to very high pitches with age.
Should I test with headphones or speakers?
Both work. Headphones make left and right separation and phase differences much easier to hear than open room speakers.
Why does the sweep sound louder in the middle than at the ends?
Human hearing is most sensitive around 1 to 5 kHz and less sensitive at very low and very high frequencies, so a sweep at a constant volume sounds uneven even from perfect speakers.
